I know the whiskey won't soothe my soul

and the morphine won't heal my heart.

Some ancient word association (circa 1991, I think)

cantaloupe
melon
melancholy
collie
dog
Lassie

What I admire most about this construction (which is indeed an authentic bit of word association, fired off in about 2-3 seconds completely off the top of my brother's head) is the diversity of cognitive connections. Much of the linkages are semantic in nature, but there is the fascinating split homophone (for lack of a better term) in the middle, and then the brain stuttering in the middle of the last three words.

And where there is no Echo

There is no description of space or love.

There is only silence.

Tick, Tick, Tick: The Temporal Cost of Free-to-Play Gaming

Yeah, I wrote this thing.

It's fine, I guess.

All this useless beauty

We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.

All art is quite useless.

Blanks

I can live without so much.

Moving Pixels Podcast: Grand Theft Auto V, Bad Men in a Bad Economy

Nick and I had what I think is a very good discussion of GTA V several weeks ago, largely concerning the implications of its conclusion.

Perhaps rightly, perhaps wrongly, I still feel like the apologist for GTA V among the game critic intelligentsia. No one I feel has given it a fair shake or (more importantly and more damningly from my perspective) a full playthrough, and it is so smart, so funny, and so well designed.

Labora et ora

The good part about my job?

I'm largely left alone.

The bad part of my job?

I can't let other people alone.

Holiday

I generally never think about Valentine's Day, maybe because I find it detestable.

St. Patrick's Day, I get. If you're Irish, a day that reminds you that you should be drunk seems reasonable to me.

Thanksgiving? I am one ungrateful son of a bitch. A day reminding me to crawl out of that wretchedness is, again, a reasonably useful one.

But a day that reminds you to love the one you love? Troubling.

The only thing that I do like about the day is the phrase, "Be Mine." It sounds vaguely sinister and threatening. It also sounds like a rather true and authentic description of love.

Allow me to possess you.

Absolutely.

The mirror cracked from side to side

I hear tell that there's a condition called hypomania

Unlike the manic period of manic depression with its markers of confusion and eruption into mental chaos (before sinking, of course, eventually into the depressive state), the hypomanic experience is one of restlessness, lack of desire for sleep, and intense productivity, which comes before that sinking, sinking, sinking...

Ora et labora.

Endless night

Where I belong.

I play my stupid songs.
I write these stupid words.

I wish you'd never learned to weep

I hate being cutesy, but, you know, sometimes it is just about the basic--even if no one believes in the basic anymore. Pure.

Pop beloved.

Hold my hand. We'll trampoline.

Finally through the roof.
And on to somewhere nearer.
And far in time.

My hobbies include:

Smoking 'til I'm dead
Working out
Talking to myself
Swearing in unique and innovative ways
Swearing in the most obvious ways possible
Playing video games
Raising children
Petting a pup until her leg thumps
Petting my wife until her leg thumps
Navel gazing
Smoking some more

Making millions from addiction

Take your baby by the hair

And pull her close, there, there, there.

And you need her
And she needs you

And you need her
And she needs you

And you need her
And she needs you

I probably should have written this while the game was a bit fresher in my mind. It probably would have been a bit more specific.

Be more specific. Be more specific. Be more specific.

Moving Pixels Podcast: All the Terror of Hide-and-Seek

A podcast on Knock-Knock. It's hide-and-seek on PC, oh, with a little surrealism mixed in for good measure. Should immediately evoke memories of childhood for most of us.
